In the wake of Brindabella Airlines suspending its operations, Qantas and Virgin Australia have both announced that they will offer special relief airfares for affected customers.
Qantas chief executive officer Alan Joyce said: “We are looking at a range of options to help the impacted communities in addition to special fares, including putting on relief flights outside our network on routes serviced by Brindabella.”
Virgin Australia stated that special airfares apply to the Brisbane to Coffs Harbour and Canberra to Newcastle routes until Friday. Qantas said in a statement that customers holding Brindabella tickets would be eligible for discounted fares on a range of regional routes.
Meanwhile, Regional Express (Rex) intends to offer Brindabella customers its cheapest fares on routes that it services. Rex also stated that it has been receiving employment enquiries following the suspension.
“Rex will…do its best to alleviate the difficulties and uncertainties of Brindabella staff affected during this festive period,” the regional airline stated. “Already we are being inundated by job applications and we will be doing our utmost to confirm job opportunities for interested applicants before Christmas.”
