Qantas and Tiger Airways have defended their practice of levying credit card surcharges after Choice Magazine labelled them as excessive.
Choice says that in some cases the airlines are charging far more than the actual merchant fees to process credit card transactions. “We think it’s fair for there to be some cost … but it shouldn’t be a profit centre,” spokesman Christopher Zinn told AAP.
All domestic airlines levy a credit card surcharge on their bookings, with Qantas charging $7.70 per passenger for domestic flights and $25 per passenger on international bookings. Tiger Airways charges a convenience fee of $6 per segment per passenger.
