Transport Minister Anthony Albanese has announced that the federal government will contribute $5.5 million towards the upgrade of the terminal at Gladstone Airport as part of its economic stimulus plan.
“As well as delivering long term benefits for the region, construction of the new terminal will have an immediate spinoff, creating local jobs at a time when the local economy is still recovering from the impact of the global recession,” said Minister Albanese.
The upgrade will expand the arrival and departure halls, provide space for additional security screening facilities and construct passenger facilities in the departure hall beyond the security screen point, as part of the council’s broader development plans. Construction is expected to begin next month.
The upgrade will allow the airport to keep up with an expected 80 per cent boom in the population of the surrounding area over the next 20 years as a result of the growing resources industry in the region.
