Dust storm hits Sydney

written by WOFA | September 23, 2009

Flights from Sydney and airports this morning have been disrupted due to major dust storms around in the area which has reduced visibility at the airport.

The combination of the dust storms and strong winds reduced Sydney Airport’s operations to only one runway. The airport issued a public information notice that while some flights have been able to land and depart, it still expects delays and disruptions to flights throughout the day across all services. The Airport advises passengers to contact their airlines for more information about delays to arrivals and departures.

Jetstar has advised that it is offering passengers travelling through Sydney who have been affected by significant delays and cancellations will be able to change their flights free of charge or request a refund until September 25. The airline also noted that it is also monitoring if flights from Newcastle Airport will be affected by the dust storms, and is keeping its website updated throughout the day.

Virgin Blue has urged its passengers to still proceed to the airport for their scheduled departure time as some flights have not been affected. It is also updating its website throughout the day.
