Lufthansa, Austrian to merge cargo operations

written by WOFA | February 25, 2010

Lufthansa Cargo and Austrian Airlines have entered into an agreement to increase the cooperation between the two companies, which will see Lufthansa Cargo become the leading global brand.

Under the agreement, which takes effect from July 1, the two companies have agreed to “optimise” traffic flows and freight handling arrangements through their hubs in Frankfurt, Munich and Vienna, with the latter to be Lufthansa’s primary central European hub. Both company’s global distribution activities will be merged and their product portfolios and production processes harmonised, with Lufthansa to take on global marketing responsibility for the two cargo carriers.

Lufthansa took over Australian Airlines during 2009, after the Austrian government accepted a takeover offer from the German carrier.
