India’s Kingfisher Airlines has been formally invited to join the oneworld alliance, putting the airline into member-elect status as it marches towards achieving full membership later this year.
The invitation follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding earlier this year between Kingfisher and oneworld which set forth a number of conditions for membership, including gaining regulatory approval. The Indian Ministry of Civil Aviation has now granted approval for the carrier to join the alliance, clearing the way for a number of other integration projects to start, ahead of Kingfisher being granted full membership.
British Airways is sponsoring Kingfisher’s entry into oneworld, with the two carriers also recently commencing a codeshare arrangement on services between India and the UK.
