Spanish Red Bull Air Race pilot Alejandro Maclean has died in an accident during a training session in Spain on August 17.

41 year old Maclean was a former captain of the Spanish national aerobatic team before joining the Red Bull Air Race in 2003, and became a key figure in the development of the event.

“The entire Red Bull Air Race community and the aerobatic fraternity have lost one of their most vibrant and passionate characters,” the race organisers said in a statement. “Alex’s significant contribution to the growth and development of the Red Bull Air Race over the past six years and to aviation in general will be remembered forever by those who shared this journey with him.”
