Cairns ILS upgrade complete

written by WOFA | October 14, 2010

A major upgrade of the Instrument Landing System (ILS) at Cairns Airport to improve its reliability and extend its useful life has now been completed by Airservices Australia.

“The old ILS equipment was one of the least reliable in the country and outages during the last wet season made it a priority for replacement. The new $3 million system is expected to provide reliable service through until 2025,” said Airservices’ general manager technology and asset services, Alastair Hodgson.

The upgrade was carried out between August and September and required the old ILS to be taken offline. Unfortunately, unseasonal wet weather meant that it caused some disruptions to operations at the airport in September. The new ILS is now operational and should provide better service during the upcoming wet season.
