The former Australian Sport Aviation Confederation has changed its name to the Air Sport Australia Confederation (ASAC) to better reflect the role and purpose of the organisation.
The ASAC says the term Sport Aviation is commonly used to cover a broader range of recreational, experimental and limited category aviation activities which had resulted in some confusion between those activities and the aviation Air Sports recognised by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale (FAI), of which ASAC is the single national representative organisation.
The ASAC was formed in 1989 as a national confederation of sport and recreational aviation organisations. It includes the Australian Aerobatic Club (AAC), the Australian Parachute Federation (AFP), the Australian Ballooning Federation (ABF), the Hang Gliding Federation of Australia (HGFA), the Gliding Federation of Australia (GFA) and the Model Aeronautical Association of Australia (MAAA), and represents over 200,000 participants.
