Regional Express (Rex) has resumed services to Mornington Island in the Gulf of Carpentaria after CASA closed the runway there to aircraft larger than 5,700kg MTOW on December 16.
“Recent runway repairs removed the runway length restriction yesterday and have enabled Rex to deploy its lighter Chieftain aircraft (operated by its subsidiary Air Link Airlines) as a shuttle service between Mornington Island and Normanton,” Rex said in a statement on Friday.
“This will allow Mornington Island passengers to connect with Rex’s Regular Public Transport (RPT) Gulf services in Normanton.”
Rex says the charter substitution will remain in place until full runway repair works are completed.
“Rex is not in a position to advise how long this is likely to take.”
Rex had operated four return weekly Saab 340 services between Mornington Island and Cairns as part of the Gulf route it operates for the Queensland Government’s regulated route scheme.
