Airservices Australia officially opened its new Aviation Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) station at Perth Airport on August 30, marking the next step in its major infrastructure upgrade.
The new $8.6 million station is located to the north of the airport and replaces the previous station which was built in 1962 and located near the domestic terminals. It features a new fire control centre, and has been built to deliver ‘Category 10’ operations to meet the needs of A380 services which are expected to begin in years to come.
“We are investing heavily in upgrading and replacing fire stations, equipment and vehicles to ensure we can provide a safe, efficient and effective fire and rescue service to the public,” said Airservices CEO Greg Russell.
There are 68 ARFF firefighters employed at Perth, with the service responding to more than 1000 calls at the airport, ranging from first aid to aircraft incidents. The station is equipped with four Rosenbauer Mk 8 ultra-large fire vehicles and one smaller Mk 5 domestic response vehicle.
