Poor weather at Antarctica New Zealand’s Scott Base has seen 104 family members prematurely end their Erebus remembrance trip.
Relatives of those who perished in Air New Zealand’s 1979 Mount Erebus disaster departed Antarctica on an RNZAF Boeing 757 around 6pm yesterday (February 16), about two hours earlier than originally planned. The flight was scheduled to arrive back in Christchurch between 1030 and 11pm last night.
Family members spent four hours on the ice, holding a planned memorial service for loved ones, and taking a tour of Scott Base. All 257 passengers and aircrew lost their lives when an Air Zealand DC-10 ZK-NZP crashed into Antarctica’s Mount Eerebus on November 28 1979.
