Hall of Fame seeks nominations

written by WOFA | November 10, 2011

Organisers of the Australian Aviation Hall of Fame are seeking nominations for the hall’s inaugural class of inductees.

Nomination forms are available at the organisation’s website — http://www.aahof.com.au/home/nominations.

The first class of Hall of Famers will be announced at an induction dinner at Wagga Wagga in September next year. Organisers say they’re looking for nominees who have made an outstanding contribution to aviation, either recently or in the more distant past, and expect to include about a dozen people in the first class of inductees.

Lawrence Hargrave, the flight pioneer who lifted himself 16 feet off the ground using a series of box kites outside Sydney on November 12 1894, was announced as the original Hall of Famer when the organisation’s website was launched in September. Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, Bert Hinkler and Lorres Bonney are other well known names under consideration for the inaugural class, according to the site.

The group hopes to open a physical hall of fame in Wagga Wagga by 2015. In the meantime it is seeking sponsorship and developing the website as a virtual hall.

The AAHOF was the brain child of Paul Tyrrell, CEO of the Regional Aviation Association of Australia,  and Chris Manning, chairman of the Australian Aviation Forum and former Chief Pilot of Qantas.
