The federal government has approved plans to expand Perth Airport’s Terminal 1 as it seeks to meet growing demand.
The $500 million first phase of the plan will see an 80 per cent expansion of floor space to accommodate 16 additional check-in counters, a larger baggage claim area, aerobridges capable of facilitating Airbus A380 superjumbo jets, and a new duty free store and other retail outlets. A new domestic pier and lounge area for Virgin Australia are also in the works as some domestic service moves into the terminal, which has primarily served international travel.
Perth Airport was earlier this month named the world’s 9th “Most Hated” airport by popular travel site CNNGO.com , which cited long queues for check-in and taxi service and called the airport’s domestic terminals “reviled.”
