Chief of the Australian Defence Force General David Hurley and Secretary General of the Indonesian Ministry of Defence Air Marshal Eris Herryanto have signed a memorandum of understanding for the transfer of four former RAAF C-130H Hercules transports to Indonesia’s air force.
The signing took place at RAAF Base Darwin and was witnessed by Defence Minister Stephen Smith and his Indonesian counterpart Dr Purnomo Yusgiantoro as part of high-level talks being held between the two governments in the Northern Territory capital.
The Department of Defence says that the transfer of the aircraft will give Indonesia a greater capability to respond to disasters and requests for humanitarian assistance. Indonesia will fund a refurbishment of the aircraft and all ongoing maintenance costs.
