Sydney Airport has argued against the short term need for a second Sydney airport..

The federal government will make a decision on whether to proceed with a second Sydney airport by the end of this year, Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Jamie Briggs confirmed today.

The Assistant Minister told Airservices’ Waypoint 2013 industy conference that the government “will finally make a decision on whether to proceed with a second Sydney airport at Badgerys Creek. An early decision, which I expect to be before Christmas, will provide certainty to the aviation sector and potentially build the economic capacity of western Sydney with the creation of thousands of new jobs for many years to come.”

In October Minister for Infrastructure Warren Truss had said a decision on the timing of construction of a second Sydney airport would be guided by the next masterplan from Sydney Airport, which is due to be released in December.
