The Lockheed Martin C-5M ‘Super Galaxy’ has achieved an initial operating capability (IOC) with the USAF’s Air Mobility Command.
A much enhanced and more reliable upgrade of the C-5B Galaxy, the C-5M features a modernised digital avionics and navigation systems suite; 22 per cent more powerful but more fuel efficient GE CF6-80C2 engines with full-authority digital engine controls (FADEC); and improved hydraulic, fuel, fire suppression pressurisation, APU, air conditioning, landing gear and other airframe systems. The work is being performed by Lockheed Martin under the avionic modernisation program (AMP) and the follow-on reliability enhancement and re-engining program (RERP).
The achievement of IOC marks the conclusion of a rigorous qualification test, operational test and evaluation period. To date 16 C-5Ms have been redelivered to the USAF out of a planned 50 airframes out to 2017, and the upgrade is expected to see the type remain in service until 2040.
