Virgin Australia hopes an improved online check-in system will save passengers time and will be more user-friendly.

The airline unveiled a new check-in system for domestic flights on Tuesday for use on smartphones, tablet devices and computers.

Virgin says passengers will be able to “check-in faster, with a more streamlined process that reduces the number of steps needed to process their booking”. Also, for the first time passengers will be able to get an SMS or emailed boarding pass when checking in using a computer and purchase extra luggage or choose extra leg room seats during the online check-in process. And for group bookings, one person will be able to check-in for the entire group before arriving at the airport.

Passengers will also receive relevant weather and travel information once check-in is complete.

Virgin Australia chief commercial officer Judith Crompton said up to 20,000 Virgin passengers per day used online check-in.

“We know that remote check-in functionality is an extremely important feature and this latest innovation delivers a better experience and increased choice for customers, with an intuitive interface and a range of options to aid their journey”, Crompton said in a statement.

While the new check-in interface was now available for smartphones, those using computers or tablets will have to wait until Thursday, August 28 to experience the new system.
