Newcastle Airport reopened for flights on Monday after storms that resulted in a collapsed roof caused the airport to be shut down on Sunday.

Flights were operating into and out of Newcastle on Monday, despite some damage to the checkin area due to flooding.

The airport, airlines and contractors had managed to establish temporary manual checkin procedures and an alternative security screening area to ensure passengers would be able to processed to board their flights .

The airport has asked passengers travelling from Newcastle to arrive earlier than usual to allow time for the extra checkin process.

Newcastle Airport said Virgin Australia had added extra flights between Newcastle and Brisbane and Melbourne to clear the backlog of passengers affected by the storm.

“Please allow extra time for amended security screening and temporary manual check-in processes,” Newcastle Airport said on its website.

“Where possible, departing passengers are urged to check-in for their flight before arriving at the airport via their airline’s website or app.”

“We’re set to resume flying from Newcastle Airport this afternoon, following an assessment of the airport terminal by our team earlier this morning,” Jetstar said.
