The RAAF has formally re-formed 460SQN as a subordinate unit within the Defence Imagery and Geospatial Organisation.
Falling under the Aerospace Operational Support Group (AOSG), 460SQN will provide geospatial imagery analyst (GIA) support to the ADF with intelligence sources such as imagery and geospatial information to support operations.
The squadron has a long and proud history, operating under the RAF’s Bomber Command in the European Theatre in WW2. Flying 6264 operational sorties, 460SQN was widely regarded as the most effective RAAF bomber unit of that conflict despite suffering heavy losses of personnel (978 airmen killed in action) and aircraft (188).
The unit’s most famous aircraft, Lancaster ‘G for George’, takes pride of place on display at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
