Lufthansa has announced that it plans to power its aircraft using jet fuel blended with biofuels from 2012, despite the carrier not having been involved in any test flying of biofuels.
CEO Wolfgang Mayrhuber said that the carrier was hoping to gain two major benefits from moving to use biofuel blends to power its fleet. “First, we are hoping to get some resource security, and second, we hope that we will have some advantages in our costs for emissions trading,” he said.
The airline says that it will likely decide on a schedule to roll out the use of blended biofuels by the end of the year.
