The latest BITRE domestic air fares index shows that airfares during May are tracking consistently lower than the same time last year.

The index records best discount economy airfares at 50.1, compared with 70.5 during May 2009, which appears to be linked to the price war between Jetstar and Tiger Airways. The restricted economy fare index was only down by 2.7 points to 92.7, while the business fare index was down 9.2 points to 94.5. The index for full economy fares only saw a marginal decline.

The index tracks fares as a percentage of fares at the baseline date of July 2003.
