BA CityFlyer is set to resume flights to various European destinations from London City Airport (LCY), days after the airport booted up operations.
The city airport has been temporarily closed since 25 March due to a steep drop in flight demand following the worldwide outbreak of COVID-19.
The first flight to depart from London City following its three-month hiatus was British Airways flight BA3287 (operated by LoganAir) to the Isle of Man on Sunday, 21 June.
In light of its reopening, the London City Airport has now announced that BACityFlyer is set to return to the skies above the bustling city from July.
The British Airways subsidiary’s fleet of Embraer E170s and E190s will embark from LCY to holiday destinations throughout Europe from early July, according to a release from the London City Airport.
Initial BA CityFlyer services between the city airport and Europe reportedly include daily flights to Ibiza, and services to Florence, Málaga and Palma three times per week, due for lift-off from 10 July.
The airline will also be recommencing regular flights within the Common Travel Area from 20 July, including Dublin, Edinburgh and Glasgow, as well as daily flights to and from the Isle of Man.
Commenting on the announcement, London City Airport chief executive Robert Sinclair said, “The restart of some services at London City Airport by our home-based carrier, British Airways, is good news for business and leisure passengers and we hope signals the start of the road towards a recovery.
“We believe there is demand from passengers to get back to flying and we have worked hard to make that possible – putting in place appropriate measures to make the airport safe and working closely with British Airways to restore some popular routes and important connections.
“We are looking forward to flights beginning to re-start and working with British Airways to grow passenger volumes and build on their route network in time as confidence returns.”
The announcement comes just days after news that the UK government is intending to relax travel and quarantine restrictions between certain European countries by early July.
Current discussions between the UK and various European countries could see Britons freely spend their summer in Spain, Portugal or Italy with no quarantine requirements.
UK officials are reportedly in discussions with the governments of Spain, Portugal, France, Italy and Green, in the hopes of securing a number of “travel corridors” between the UK and these countries.
These “travel corridors” would see residents on each end of the ‘corridor’ able to travel freely between the two countries, with no enforced quarantine or self-isolation period.
