Ethiopian Airlines resumes daily passenger flights to historic city of Axum following airport upgrades

Ethiopian Airlines Group, Africa’s largest airline, has announced the reinstatement of its daily passenger flights to the historic city of Axum as of June 9, 2024. The resumption of flights follows the successful completion of extensive maintenance work on both the airfield and terminal facilities, with a contract amount of 290 million Ethiopian Birr (ETB).

Axum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its cultural significance and home to the ancient Axumite Kingdom, is a significant symbol of Ethiopia as an origin to one of the oldest civilizations. Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO, Mr. Mesfin Tasew, expressed his delight in reinstating the flights, stating, “Our return to Axum with a daily service after the massive investment on airport facility maintenance is a testament to our commitment to boost air transportation services in the country. As a national carrier, we are determined to invest in and improve our flight offerings nationwide.”

Currently serving 20 domestic destinations, Ethiopian Airlines is dedicated to expanding its domestic reach and enhancing the quality of services. The airline’s commitment to excellence is exemplified by its ongoing efforts to construct and modernize aviation infrastructure across the country.

Recently, Ethiopian Airlines inaugurated the $50 million transformed Addis Ababa Bole Domestic Terminal, marking a significant milestone in enhancing the travel experience within Ethiopia. The airline has also successfully launched modern terminals in Gode and Jinka, further expanding its commitment to modern infrastructure. Additionally, Ethiopian Airlines is set to unveil the Wako Gutu Airport Terminal in Bale Robe, a town in south-central Oromia Region of Ethiopia, in the near future.

As one of the fastest-growing airlines globally and the continent’s largest airline brand, Ethiopian Airlines Group commands the lion’s share of the African passenger and cargo network, operating the youngest and most modern fleet to more than 150 domestic and international passenger and cargo destinations across five continents.
